Subject: Annual Business Registration Renewal Required – Village of Lake Delton

The Village of Lake Delton recently adopted Ordinance No. 25-038, creating Chapter 25 of the Village Code, which requires all businesses operating within the Village to register annually. 

Annual registrations run July 1st - June 30th and must be completed before June 30th annually.  Business Registration is required for anyone transacting sales or other business in Lake Delton regardless of their physical location.  The purpose of this ordinance is to assist village staff in determining whether or not Premier Resort Area Tax (PRAT) and Room Tax are properly being collected and reported.  Quite frequently, vendors are reporting taxes to the wrong municipality because of the Wisconsin Dells tourism area.  This helps distinguish the boundary differences between the Village of Lake Delton and the City of Wisconsin Dells.  The State of Wisconsin collects PRAT but does not always have the properly designated community.  The municipalities collect the Room Tax respectively.

Existing businesses are considered renewals. You may have a Baraboo (53913) or a Wisconsin Dells (53965) mailing address and still be located in the Village of Lake Delton.  Confirm by checking this Lake Delton Zip code map.

Important Details:

• All businesses must register annually; licenses are not transferable. 
  • Registration fees are assessed according to the Village Fee Schedule: 
    1. $25.00 New businesses 
  • $10.00 Renewals 
  • Failure to register will result in penalties. 

Deadline:

Please ensure your registration is completed before July 1, 2026, to remain in compliance for the July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027 licensing period.

­Effective December 24, 2025, the United States Postal Service (USPS) is moving the postmark process from local application to regional sorting centers. The Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR), State and Local Finance Division has requested the Village share the following information with you.

The USPS postmark change has raised concerns about the timeliness of property tax payments, so DOR encourages you to communicate this change to property taxpayers and to recommend mailing payments earlier than usual. When the village receives a payment, we look at the postmark to determine if it was mailed timely. 

If payment was received in January; any payment postmarked (not dated) December 31st is recorded on the receipt that its payment was made in December even though it will be posted in January.

If the payment is received in February, the following procedures are used to determine whether or not the payment was made timely:

• Within the five working day grace period – are considered timely, regardless of postmark (secs. 74.11, and 74.12, Wis. Stats.)
• After the grace period – must be properly addressed and postmarked before midnight of the due date to be considered timely (sec. 74.69(1), Wis. Stats.)
• Late payments – may be considered timely if the delay was due to a USPS delay or administrative error (sec. 74.69(2), Wis. Stats.)

When a taxpayer disputes the Whether or not the payment was received timely, Sauk County follows the state law for guidance regarding timeliness of payments. Under state law:

• A taxpayer may file a written request with the county treasurer requesting the county board determine their payment as timely (sec. 74.69(3)(b), Wis. Stats.)
• County board makes the determination to consider the late payment as timely if the sole reason the payment was not timely is due to a USPS delay or administrative error (sec. 74.69(3)(c), Wis. Stats.)

A primary election will not be held in the Village of Lake Delton on February 17, 2026 due to the fact none of the jurisdictional races require a primary contest for the Spring Election on April 7, 2026.

Alternate side parking in the Village takes effect on December 1st and runs through March 15th each year. Between the hours of 12 midnight and 6 am, vehicles shall be parked on the even-numbered side of the street on even-numbered days of the month and on the odd-numbered side of the street on odd-numbered days of the month. Please be aware of what day it will be after midnight of the evening you park.

The 2025 tax bill payable in 2026 was released to the Sauk County Treasurer's office on November 26 2025 and published to their website on the same day. Hard copies should follow in the mail within the following week.

The mill rate for the Wisconsin Dells School District dropped from $12.04 to $11.08 while those folks living in the Baraboo School District saw decrease from $13.59 down to $12.04.

The online payment portal For the village will be open during the first week of December. Please do not send any payments to the Sauk County Treasurer prior to January 31 2026.
